🌸Spring Series Prize List Now Available! Plus: Jumper Scoring Explained🏇

Beverly

Updated: 6 days ago

This season, we’re revising the prize list to detail the jumper divisions for the show. The new divisions are organized by height, rider eligibility, and class types. Today, we’re diving into the details of the class types so competitors can better understand the scoring system they’ll encounter at the ring.

Understanding the Jumper Class Types

Each jumper class at Beverly follows USEF scoring tables, ensuring consistency and preparing riders for USEFrated competition. Riders will see four main formats throughout the series:

Optimum Time (USEF Table IV, Section 1)

  • This format rewards precision over pure speed.

  • Riders aim to complete the course as close as possible to a posted optimum time—a target set slightly below the maximum time allowed.

  • Time penalties apply if a competitor exceeds the time allowed.

  • In the event of a tie, the rider closest to the optimum time without faults wins.

  • This is an excellent format for developing riders or young horses learning to balance pace with control.

Fastest Clear Round (USEF Table II, Section 1)

  • One round, one chance: the fastest clear round wins.

  • Knockdowns, refusals, and exceeding the time allowed result in penalties.

  • There is no separate jump-off—riders must balance speed with accuracy on their first go.

  • This format favors confident, efficient rounds and is often used for lower-level or schooling rounds.

Jump-Off Format (USEF Table II, 2b)

  • Riders who go clear in the first round stay in the ring and wait for the buzzer to begin the jump-off.

  • The jump-off is a shortened version of the original course with tighter turns and strategic challenges.

  • The fastest clear round in the jump-off determines the winner.

  • This format adds an element of strategy, as riders must navigate risk versus reward in both rounds.

Power & Speed (USEF Table II, 2c)

  • The course is split into two phases: the first is the "power" phase, which tests careful, fault-free riding.

  • If the rider completes the power phase clear, they seamlessly continue into the "speed" phase.

  • The speed phase is all about time—the fastest clean ride takes the class.

  • If a rider incurs faults in the power phase, they are eliminated from the speed phase.

  • This is a great class for competitors who enjoy a mix of technical riding and fast-paced excitement!

New Heights & Rider Eligibility

Jumper divisions are now offered at clearly defined height increments, with both metric and imperial measurements displayed. Additionally, amateurs and professionals will be separated in divisions, ensuring fair competition for riders at all experience levels.
