In May, we debuted our innovative summer show lease program. Here is a quick check in on the riders who signed up and their progress to date.
Identifying Goals and Getting There
Once our junior riders were paired with either leased or owned horses they set a goal to compete at the VHSA Associate Championships in Lexington.
To qualify, each rider and horse must participate in five VHSA-recognized shows. This requires careful planning, beginning months in advance.
Once we had the the end goal, we worked backward to map out each step to ensure nothing is overlooked.
We started by setting a calendar of shows to meet this qualification far in advance to allow for busy and changing summer schedules.
Then it was time to get to work.
The Formula for Success
As we often say, success in the equestrian world is a blend of 70% management, 20% riding skill, and 10% luck. Here's how we break it down:
1. Management (70%)
- Horse Soundness and Fitness: Maintaining optimal health and conditioning.
- Rider Skills and Readiness: Continuous training and skill enhancement.
- Horse Paperwork: Keeping all documentation current and accurate.
- The Mental Game: Preparing both rider and horse mentally for the challenges ahead.
2. Riding Skill (20%)
- Focused training sessions to refine techniques and build confidence.
3. Luck (10%)
- Being prepared for the unexpected and having backup plans in place.
